Fishing is a traditional past time for Malawians near the river. From the banks of the Shire, one has to navigate a tricky terrain and always keep an eye on the crocs. The rewards can be huge in the form of giant catfish, or the ferocious tiger fish. But sure enough there are other exciting fish in the river such as, Electric Barbel, Eel, Squeaker etc...

Fishing rods are available for hire and baits can be arranged if you let us know in advance. A guide can be organised on request.

David Livingstone, the world famous explorer/missionary, travelled up the Shire River from the Zambezi in 1863 on the steamboat, "The Pioneer". One of his companions, Richard Thornton died of "fever and dysentery" and was burried under a big baobab tree, a five minute walk from our lodge.
